ALABASTER – The Thompson Warriors got a positive out of their home tri-match against the Montgomery Academy Eagles and Spain Park Jaguars as they earned a victory in a county battle to finish the night 1-1.

Thompson defeated Spain Park 2-1 on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at Thompson High School in a matchup that went down to the wire in the third set.

The Jags got off to a solid start in the matchup as they took control of the lead in the opening set.

Spain Park went on to win the first set 25-18, putting the pressure on the Warriors to mount a response in their home tri-match.

Thompson fought back and not only made the second set close but got out in front.

In the end, the Warriors held off the Jags and took the win in the second set, claiming a 25-22 victory to set up a third set to decide the matchup.

That third set went down to the very end as the teams were tied up at 14-14 down the stretch of the set.

With extra points required to decide the winner, Thompson stepped up and took the next two points. That gave the team the 16-14 win in the third set and the 2-1 victory in the match.

Before the county foes met though, both teams had trouble getting past one of the top teams in Class 6A in Montgomery Academy.

In Thompson’s matchup with the Eagles, the Warriors fell into an early hole and ended up going down by double digits. Montgomery Academy then took the 25-14 win to get the upper hand in the match.

From there, Thompson fought back to make the second set a much closer affair. The Warriors were just one point away from forcing extra points in the set, but the Eagles took the 25-23 win to secure the sweep.

Spain Park also dropped the first set of its matchup with Montgomery Academy as the Eagles got out in front and saw out a 25-17 victory.

However, whereas the Warriors fell in the second set, the Jags flipped the script in the second set and won 25-21, evening up the match.

Montgomery Academy then responded in the third set, taking it by a score of 15-11 to claim wins over both Shelby County foes in the tri-match.

Thompson will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 3 when the Warriors take on the Homewood Patriots at 6 p.m. at Thompson High School.

As for Spain Park, the Jags have another road tri-match on their hands as they will take on the Bob Jones Patriots and Sparkman Senators on Thursday, Oct. 3 at Bob Jones High School. The match with Sparkman will start at 5:30 p.m. before the Bob Jones game at 6:30 p.m.
