SULLIGENT – The Vincent Yellow Jackets are 4-0 for the third consecutive season after Friday, Sept. 20’s 29-6 win at the Sulligent Blue Devils.
“I’m proud of our guys for weathering the long road trip and winning against a very good team in a tough environment,” Vincent coach Lucas Weatherford said. “Now we need to focus on correcting our mistakes and improving from this game. We cannot get complacent because we still have a tough road ahead.”
The Yellow Jackets (2-0 in Class 2A, Region 5) wasted little time, jumping out to a 22-0 first-quarter lead as they scored on their first three possessions.
The first drive covered 58 yards—mostly on the ground with Jayden Roberts and Casen Fields, who finished the drive with a 26-yard touchdown pass to Lane Mims on fourth-and-long. Roberts ran in the 2-point conversion to make it 8-0.
A stout Vincent defense forced a Sulligent punt, and the visitors then scored in two plays, capped by a 70-yard run by Fields.
Fields passed to Roberts for the 2-point conversion to make it 16-0.
Still in the first quarter, Vincent scored on a four-play drive, with Aiden Gasaway finding the end zone from 25 yards out, making the score 22-0.
Sulligent scored just before halftime on a Johnwill Spruil quarterback keeper to make it 22-6 at the intermission.
The third quarter was scoreless for both teams. Vincent’s Marcus Hall blocked a punt and Deontaye Robertson intercepted a Sulligent pass, but the Jackets could not capitalize for points.
Grayson Gulde recorded an interception late in the fourth quarter, and Gasaway punched it in for the touchdown. Daniel Campos kicked through the game’s final point to make it 29-6.
Fields had 89 yards on eight carries while also passing for 43 yards and a score. The VHS defense forced four turnovers.
Vincent will visit Childersburg on Sept. 27 for a non-region tilt.
