Another quiet week in upsets meant local teams stayed put yet again in the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s football media rankings.

The Thompson Warriors, Spain Park Jaguars and Vincent Yellow Jackets maintained their spots in the latest rankings when they were released on Wednesday, Sept. 18, and the Chelsea Hornets, Helena Huskies, Shelby County Wildcats and Briarwood Christian Lions received votes.

Thompson remained at No. 3 in the Class 7A rankings for Week 4. It received 147 votes, nine behind Auburn High School, which jumped into second place with its upset of former No. 2 Enterprise.

The Warriors improved to 3-1 with a 42-7 win over Oak Mountain, which was their third straight win and second in Class 7A, Region 3 play. They will look to keep their hot streak alive when they travel to Vestavia Hills on Sept. 20.

Spain Park emerged from another thriller and maintained its No. 4 rank in Class 6A behind just Saraland, Parker and Clay-Chalkville.

The Jags downed the Huskies 28-26 to remain undefeated at 3-0 on the season. Now, they will head back home to host Benjamin Russell on Sept. 20.

Vincent stayed at No. 6 in Class 2A as it remained undefeated with a 37-0 win over Lamar County in its region opener.

Now sitting at 3-0, the Jackets will hope to keep their positive momentum rolling during a tough upcoming slate. That schedule starts on Sept. 20 when they will face the Sulligent Blue Devils, which just dropped from the top 10 but still received four votes.

Four teams got close to reaching the top 10, but none got closer than Chelsea. The Hornets now sit just two votes away from the Class 6A top 10 after earning 12 votes this week, up from nine in Week 3. They remained undefeated last week with a tight win over Pelham and will face Calera on Sept. 20.

Helena received two votes in the Class 6A rankings despite losing its first game of the season to Spain Park in Week 3. The Huskies now sit at 2-1 and will face Moody in non-region play at home on Sept. 20.

Shelby County and Briarwood each received four votes in the Class 5A rankings. Both are increases after the Wildcats received one vote last week and the Lions received two.

The two teams are trending in the opposite direction with Shelby County now at 4-0 after a 42-6 win over Jemison and Briarwood sitting at 0-4 following a 20-7 loss to Carver-Birmingham.

Now, the Wildcats will hope to stay undefeated as they come home on Sept. 20 to face Northside, which received three top 10 votes this week. The Lions will aim for their first win of the season against Wenonah at home on Sept. 20.
