BIRMINGHAM – Briarwood could not hold on to a halftime lead as the Lions fell at Carver-Birmingham, 20-7, on Friday, Sept. 13.

Briarwood’s Brooks Allred scored the game’s first points on a 2-yard run in the second quarter, and Garrett Heinemann’s point after made it 7-0.

Carver answered with a 43-yard touchdown pass from Dejarvis Wade, but could not convert for any points after the touchdown and trailed 7-6 at the intermission.

The second half belonged to the hosts. The Rams took the lead with a 75-yard pass from Wade, and it was the same connection for the 2-point conversion to make the score 14-7 in Carver’s favor.

The Rams (2-0, 2-0 in Class 5A, Region 5) put the game out of reach with a 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

In the end, Carver scored 20 unanswered points to overcome the early 7-0 deficit and defeat Briarwood.

The Lions (0-4, 0-2) leaned heavily on the running game, rushing for 200 yards on 34 carries but managing only 15 yards passing.

Carver was at the other end of the spectrum—rushing for only 33 yards on 26 carries but completing 20 passes in 35 attempts for 348 yards through the air.

Eli Thompson led the rushing attack for Briarwood with 87 yards on nine carries. Luke Reynolds had 67 yards on seven carries, and Allred added 50 yards on nine rushes.

Quarterback Charles Dedmon complete six passes in 17 attempts.

Sam Canale recorded an interception for the Lions defense.

The Lions will look to pick up their first win of the season as the Wenonah Dragons visit on Sept. 20.
