It was all quiet for Shelby County schools in the Week 3 football media rankings as the Thompson Warriors, Spain Park Jaguars and Vincent Yellow Jackets ended the week where they started.

Thompson remained at No. 3 in Class 7A, Spain Park stayed at No. 4 in Class 6A and Vincent held steady at No. 6 in Class 2A when the Alabama Sports Writers Association released its latest rankings on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

In addition, the Chelsea Hornets, Helena Huskies, Briarwood Christian Lions and Shelby County Wildcats each earned votes in their respective classifications.

Thompson checked in at No. 3 for the third straight week with 141 votes, eight behind second-place Enterprise and four above fourth-place Auburn High.

The Warriors held on to their spot thanks to a 47-7 victory on the road against the Tuscaloosa County Wildcats. The win took them to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in area play.

Thompson will look to extend its win streak to three when it hosts the Oak Mountain Eagles on Sept. 13 in a county battle in region play.

Spain Park’s bye week and activity around it meant that the Jags stayed at No. 3 in the Class 6A poll. The Jags received 132 votes, seven behind third-place Clay-Chalkville.

Now, Spain Park will take its 2-0 record into region play as it travels to the Helena Huskies on Sept. 13.

For the second straight week, Vincent came in at No. 6 in the Class 2A rankings with 83 votes.

The Jackets were also on the bye in Week 3 ahead of their first region game.

Vincent will host Lamar County on Sept. 13 for homecoming as it hopes to improve to 3-0 and start out region play with a win.

While Chelsea, Helena, Briarwood and Shelby County found themselves on the outside looking in, all four of them received top 10 votes in the latest rankings.

Chelsea earned nine votes in Class 6A, the 12th most of any team in the classification, for improving to 3-0 with a 36-33 win over Pelham to start region play. The Hornets have a bye week this week before hosting Calera on Sept. 20.

Helena was just behind the Hornets with eight votes in the Class 6A poll. The Huskies improved to 2-0 with a win over Chilton County in their region opener, and they will come home for the first time this season to host Spain Park on Sept. 13.

Briarwood received two votes in this week’s Class 5A rankings, which was tied for the 14th most in the classification. The Lions dropped to 0-3 on the season after losing to Ramsay in Week 3. They will look to bounce back at the Carver Rams in Birmingham on Sept. 13.

For the first time this season, the Shelby County Wildcats received one vote in the Class 5A rankings. The Wildcats improved to 3-0 with a 15-7 win on the road at Sipsey Valley to secure their best start to the season since 2008.

Shelby County will hit the road to face Jemison on Sept. 13 in search of a second-straight region win.

This week was the first time this season that the No. 1 team in each classification has remained the same after a quiet week of upsets across the top 10.
