The Montevallo Bulldogs will head into the Fayette County Tournament undefeated on the week thanks to a pair of road sweeps over the Isabella Mustangs and Selma Saints.

After defeating the Mustangs 3-0 on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at Isabella High School in non-area play, Montevallo improved to 2-0 in area play with a dominant 3-0 victory against Selma on Thursday, Sept. 5 at Selma High School.

In the first match of the week against Isabella, the Bulldogs had to fend off the Mustangs down the stretch of the first set as only a handful of points separated the teams.

Montevallo saw out the 25-21 first-set win, and that led to more success as the match went on.

The Bulldogs stormed out to a big lead in the second set and continued to control the set to eventually win 25-11.

That put them up 2-0 needing just one more set win to seal the victory on the road.

Isabella made the third set closer than the wide second-set score line, but the set ended just like all of the others: with Montevallo on top.

In the end, the Bulldogs claimed a 25-18 win in the third set which secured the 3-0 match win.

Two days later, Montevallo got back into area action against Selma, looking to take a second-straight win to open area play after previously defeating Jemison 3-1 at home on Tuesday, Aug. 27.

The Bulldogs stormed out of the gate in the first set and used a long run to establish themselves as the clear favorite in the matchup.

Selma never got close to Montevallo’s lead down the stretch as the Bulldogs won 25-5 to go up 1-0 in the match.

The Saints found the scoreboard more often in the second set to break up the Montevallo rallies, but they were still unable to make much of an impact as the Bulldogs remained in control.

Montevallo’s 25-12 win in the second set extended the visitors’ lead in the match to 2-0 as everything continued to roll in their favor.

From there, the Bulldogs took another big lead in the third set and used the momentum from the first two set victories to seal the deal.

Montevallo cruised once again to a 25-8 win to take the third set and the 3-0 match victory.

The Bulldogs are now 7-4 on the season and will look to continue their winning ways against Berry, Lamar County and Cordova on Saturday, Sept. 7 in the Fayette County Tournament.
