With the start of region play looming on Sept. 6, the Thompson Warriors, Spain Park Jaguars and Vincent Yellow Jackets now know that they will enter their region slates in the top 10 of their respective classifications.

The Alabama Sports Writers Association’s latest media rankings that were released on Wednesday, Sept. 4 saw Vincent rise one spot for the second straight week while Thompson and Spain Park held steady from their Week 2 results.

In addition, the Briarwood Christian Lions dropped out of the Class 5A top 10, joining the Helena Huskies and Chelsea Hornets as county teams that received votes but fell just outside the top 10.

Thompson held on to its No. 3 spot in the Class 7A rankings behind Central-Phenix City and Enterprise for the second straight week.

The Warriors slipped in Week 1 after losing in overtime to Grayson but got 141 votes after beating Lipscomb Academy 28-21 in Nashville, Tenn. on Thursday, Aug. 29.

Now sporting a 1-1 record going into region play, Thompson will start out Class 7A, Region 3 action on the road at Tuscaloosa County on Sept. 6.

Spain Park made one of the biggest statements of the week by beating Hoover 39-37, but the Jags remained at No. 4 in Class 6A going into Week 3.

All three teams above Spain Park got big wins as well in Week 2 with Saraland beating Blount, Parker downing Mountain Brook and Clay-Chalkville dominating Ramsay. The Jags did receive one first place vote and sit just three votes behind third-place Clay-Chalkville.

Spain Park is on its bye week for Week 3 before a matchup against Helena on the road on Sept. 13 which will open up region play for the Jags.

The lone team in the county to move up in the rankings was Vincent as it rose one spot to No. 6 in Class 2A.

The Jackets have now gone up a spot in the poll in each of the first two weeks of the season, this time because of their 21-18 win over Class 3A B.B. Comer, their first over the Tigers since 2014.

Vincent will also join Spain Park on its bye week in Week 3 and kick off region play away from home on Sept. 13 against Lamar County.

Briarwood appeared in the first two Class 5A polls of the season but slipped out of the top 10 this week after an 0-2 start. The Lions received six votes, the 14th most of all 5A teams.

Now, they’ll have a chance to get their first win of the season on Sept. 6 against Ramsay, a team which is also sliding down the rankings after an 0-2 start as the Rams were ranked No. 9 in the latest poll.

The Helena Huskies and Chelsea Hornets also both received votes in the Class 6A poll with Helena earning eight votes and Chelsea securing six votes.

The 1-0 Huskies will travel to Chilton County to face the Tigers on Sept. 6 while the 2-0 Hornets will go to Pelham to battle the Panthers.
