HOOVER – Even though the season is less than a week old, the Spain Park Jaguars may have just gotten their statement win of the year after defeating one of the best teams in all of Class 6A.

Spain Park swept the Mountain Brook Spartans, 3-0, on Tuesday, Aug. 27 at Spain Park High School to keep its winning ways going.

Mountain Brook entered the game with a 4-2 record after taking four wins at the Juanita Boddie tournament on Aug. 23 and 24.

Spain Park had its own successful run at the Boddie with an undefeated pool play record, setting up a showdown between a Class 7A Elite Eight side in the Jags and the defending Class 6A state champions in the Spartans.

The opening set between the two teams was as close as they come with only a handful of points separating the teams as they hit the final stretch of the first set.

In the end, Spain Park kept Mountain Brook from forcing extra points on set point and took a 25-23 win to open up the match.

With the Jags now in front 1-0 in the match, they continued to establish themselves as the favorite in the second set as they pulled away to another lead.

Spain Park took the second set by a score of 25-18, giving it a 2-0 lead in the match and putting the Spartans’ backs against the wall.

The Jags saved their best effort for the third set, and with a chance to end the match on the line, they stepped up and delivered a double-digit set win.

With a 25-15 third set win to finish out the match, Spain Park sealed the 3-0 win to earn the sweep.

The win puts the Jags at 5-2 on the season as they look to gain momentum ahead of region play.

Spain Park’s last game before Labor Day weekend will be on the road at the Shades Valley Mounties on Thursday, Aug. 29 at 6 p.m.
