COLUMBIANA – A Montevallo man charged with murder was convicted of that crime on Thursday, Aug. 22 following a four-day trial.
Corey Antwon Broadnax, who has been in the custody of the Shelby County Jail since Feb. 13, 2023, was convicted of the shooting and subsequent murder of Shante Hudson which occurred on Feb. 11, 2023.
According to police records, Hudson, who was a family member of Broadnax’s estranged wife, was attending a wake that Broadnax was also in attendance of on the day of the shooting.
During the wake, Broadnax became involved in a public altercation with his wife that Hudson attempted to intercede.
In response to Hudson’s involvement, Broadnax shot him eight times at close range and fled from the scene.
Despite attempts from medical professionals, Hudson was later declared dead at Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster due to his injuries. Broadnax was arrested two days later following a manhunt.
“Mr. Broadnax’s senseless shooting of Mr. Hudson was despicable, and tragic for the Hudson family,” District Attorney Matt Casey said. “We hope this conviction will bring closure to the family, as well as stand as a reminder to any that would commit acts of violence in our community that we will vigorously pursue your prosecution.”
The case against Broadnax was investigated and handled by the Montevallo Police Department with Chief Deputy District Attorney Ben Fuller and Assistant District Attorney Sara Beth prosecuting the case.
Now found guilty on the charge of murder, Broadnax awaits sentencing.
While no sentencing date has yet been announced by the court, Broadnax—who has been convicted of two prior felonies—faces a potential range of punishment between 99 years or life imprisonment in accordance with Alabama’s Habitual Felony Offender Act.
