PELHAM – A Pelham school bus transporting children was involved in a three-vehicle collision on the morning of Wednesday, Aug. 14.
The crash occurred at the four way intersection of Highway 31 and Winslett Road, directly in front of the Riverchase Kia and AutoZone.
“The bus was early in its route, and there were nine students on board at the time of the accident,” Assistant Superintendent Floyd Collins said. “We’re thankful no student or bus driver injuries were reported, and we appreciate the city of Pelham first responders who provided support on the scene.”
Two pickup trucks, including a dark blue Dodge Ram 1500 and a lighter blue truck of indeterminate make and model, were also involved in the crash. Both trucks received severe damage to their front ends.
Authorities say the crash took place at around 7:25 a.m. when the two trucks collided with one another and subsequently slid into a collision with the school bus.
At the scene of the accident, the lighter blue truck was seen to have made direct contact with the front driver’s side of the school bus as the result of the crash, while the dark blue Ram 1500 sat behind the school bus facing away from the other two vehicles.
Authorities at the scene of the crash further confirmed that no injuries were sustained on the school bus as a result of the accident, but the status of the drivers of the two trucks remain unclear at this time.
Officials from Pelham City Schools were present at the scene of the accident following the incident, including Collins. Pelham school administrators promptly called the parents of the students who were on the bus to notify them and update them on the situation.
Due to damage sustained by the bus, an alternate bus picked up the students from the scene and transported them safely to the school.
The exact circumstances of the crash remain unclear at this time and the incident is under active investigation.
