Sheriff’s office identifies 22-year-old as suspect in domestic shooting

NORTH SHELBY – The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office has identified the shooter from an alleged domestic incident that occurred at the 200 block of Shoal Run Trail on July 21.

Casey Deandre Smith, 22, of Birmingham has been identified as the suspect in the shooting. Smith was booked into the Shelby County Jail on July 21 on no bond with charges of domestic violence in the first and second degree and attempt to commit a class A felony.

On July 21 at approximately 4:18 p.m., deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the 200 block of Shoal Run Trail after a shooting occurred. Upon arrival, deputies discovered an adult male suffering from at least one gunshot wound to the torso. Deputies rendered aid to the victim until other personnel could arrive on the scene. North Shelby Fire responded and provided rescue aid and the victim was transported to a Birmingham area hospital where they underwent surgery. The victim is reported to currently be in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.

Shortly after the shooting, deputies detained a suspect at an unspecified location near the scene. The shooting appears to be the result of a domestic incident and the parties involved are said to have known each other. The sheriff’s office shared that it does not believe there is any reason to suspect any danger to the community at this time.
