A man was transported to UAB Hospital by helicopter on Monday, July 15 after jumping off of the Coosa River Bridge.
The Childersburg Fire Department and Police Department were dispatched to Coosa River Bridge on the border of Shelby and Talladega County on July 15 at approximately 11:35 a.m. after an adult male jumped more than 80 feet off of the middle of the bridge.
The Harpersville Police and Fire Departments were requested for mutual aid and an eye witness spotted an adult male—approximately 20-30 years old—floating on his back near the middle of the river.
Two firefighters wearing life jackets entered the water from the southeast river bank and swam towards the middle of the river and retrieved the man who was nearly submerged and in severe pain.
Once he was securely brought to the river bank, the man was hoisted up a ladder with assistance from Childersburg police and fire crews as well as the Harpersville Police and Fire Departments. He was then treated by Childersburg medics on the southeast riverbank.
The patient was reportedly conscious and in communication with medics when he was transferred to a Lifesaver Helicopter and transported to UAB Hospital.
More information on the incident will be released as it becomes available.
