We are sad to announce the death of Paul M. Spicer, who passed away on July 3, 2024, at the age of 60.
Born at Shelby Medical Center in Alabaster, Alabama, Paul was a graduate of Montevallo High School and later earned a degree from the University of Montevallo, where he was vehemently committed to the “purple side.” His love for environmental studies was evident during his time at UM, where he immersed himself in the UM Garden and cultivated his green thumb with passion.
Paul cherished fond memories of family vacations at Mexico Beach, where he delighted in playing on sandy shores and listening to the crashing waves. These moments brought him immense joy and peace.
In high school, Paul proudly served as drum major for the Troubadours and later found fulfillment as a sous chef, sharing his culinary talents generously. He had a loving heart, a zest for life, an uncanny memory, and an outstanding ability to connect through his humor and creativity. He could always be counted on for late-night phone conversations that left friends and family laughing and feeling uplifted.
Paul was also an avid sports enthusiast. He especially loved following Auburn football and supported University of Montevallo’s basketball and baseball teams with fervor. He collected data and stats and was a walking encyclopedia for not only sports, but for Montevallo history and folklore as well.
Despite his challenges, including battles with alcohol addiction, Paul remained upbeat and encouraged throughout his difficult medical journey.
One of Paul’s favorite paintings, “The Return of the Prodigal Son” by Rembrandt, held deep significance for him, reminding him of God’s love and goodness in his life.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, John and Shirley, and his eldest brother, Clay.
He leaves behind siblings Noel, Anita, Shawn, Erin, and Elaine, his dear friend Hettie, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A committal service will be held at Macedonia Cemetery in Pea Ridge, Alabama for friends and family to honor Paul’s life on Thursday, July 11 at 12:15 p.m.
Family will gather immediately after the service at Indigo Cafe on Main Street in Montevallo for a time of food and fellowship.
In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Paul’s memory with a donation to the UM Garden. https://www.montevallo.edu/give/annual-giving/ (choose Environmental Education Program
