It was a big year for offensive players from around Shelby County, but in the end, only one could take the title of Hitter of the Year.

Despite a crowded field and a big challenge from Vincent’s Casen Fields, D’Marion Terrell of Thompson rose above the rest and took the honor of the county’s top bat.

Terrell dominated the major hitting categories in his senior season with the Warriors. He led the county in six different statistics, including batting average, slugging percentage, OPS, hits, RBI and home runs.

In 129 at-bats, he earned an average of .426 thanks to a big year of 55 hits and 20 walks against just 17 strikeouts.

He made the most of those 55 hits as he earned 42 RBI and scored 41 runs for himself to power the Thompson offense.

Terrell was also a big-time power bat for the Warriors as he often stretched those hits into extra bases. He ended the year as the county’s home run king with 10 longballs, and he also added 10 doubles and four triples.

Those helped him finish out the season with a .519 on-base percentage, a .798 slugging percentage and a 1.318 OPS and establish him as the top hitter in the county.

While his performance at the plate earned him Hitter of the Year honors, that wasn’t the extent of his contributions to Thompson this year as his athleticism on the base paths and his arm strength came through time and again.

Out of his 19 stolen base attempts in 2024, Terrell reached safely 18 times, showcasing his speed and improving the Warriors’ chances of converting his hits into runs.

On the mound, Terrell pitched 46.1 innings and went 6-3 with a 2.12 ERA and 1.52 WHIP. Opposing hitters only tagged him for 14 earned runs as they batted .143 combined against him.

All of those key factors made him an invaluable part of a Thompson team that rallied for an area championship and reached the quarterfinals of the Class 7A playoffs after spending another year toward the top of the rankings.

Terrell will now take his talents to Auburn after announcing his commitment on Tuesday, May 21, but not before collecting another honor for the Warriors as the Shelby County Hitter of the Year.
