Area boys soccer stars honored on All-Metro team

With another successful boys soccer season winding down, the city’s best players received well-deserved recognition with the release of the 2024 All-Metro team on Wednesday, May 8.
Coaches from around the Birmingham area compiled the rosters for the First Team, Second Team and Honorable Mentions.
Within those rosters, 10 county schools were represented, including Oak Mountain, Chelsea, Spain Park, Thompson, Pelham, Calera, Helena, Briarwood Christian, Indian Springs, Montevallo and Westminster at Oak Mountain.
In addition, the coaches gave out two awards. The Ray Woodard Metro Coach of the Year Award went to Oak Mountain’s David DiPiazza after he guided the Eagles to a 27-0-1 start to the season. Spain Park received the Paul Stanton Team Sportsmanship Award.
Oak Mountain led all schools with four First Team selections as forwards Aidan Riley and Nate Joiner, midfielder Gabe Capocci and defender and reigning Shelby County Player of the Year Om Shrestha made the squad. Forward Sam Collins and defender Luke Jovanovich were named to the Second Team.
Chelsea had three First Team selections after ending the regular season as the No. 2 team in Class 7A. Midfielder Kaleb Bass and goalkeeper Brock Marlow made the first team along with defender Luke Miller, who was one of two sophomores along with Gardendale midfielder Wyatt Chandler to earn First Team honors.
In addition, the Hornets were represented on the Second Team by forwards Max Wever and Javi Rivera-Miranda and on the Honorable Mentions list by defender Nick Fogle.
Pelham had two First Team selections in forward Elder Esquival and goalkeeper Raul Jacobo after reaching the quarterfinals of Class 6A. Forward Matthew Chaux and defender Jair Camargo were named to the Second Team and midfielder Anzel Santos and defender Jake Garner earned Honorable Mentions.
Thompson was represented on the First Team by defender Braylon Anderson and the Second Team by goalkeeper Patrick Dunaway. Forward Nathan Gantt, midfielder Johan Comi, defender Erick Huerta and goalkeeper Gio Gallegos were named Honorable Mentions.
Briarwood’s Cameron Harrington earned a defender spot on the First Team, and the Lions also had two members of the Second Team in midfielder Sawyer Felton and goalkeeper Emerson Maughan. Forwards Reece Frost and Carson Tucker and midfielder Thomas Lanier earned Honorable Mentions.
Westminster at Oak Mountain had forward Aiden Gamble represent it on the First Team, defender Noah Holmes on the Second Team and forward Charlie Krulak, defenders Walter Moore and Rocco Zaccagni and goalkeeper Sam Carter as Honorable Mentions.
Spain Park midfielder Andrew Phillips earned a Second Team spot and forwards Bobby Propper and Cole Russell and midfielder Grant Walter earned Honorable Mentions.
Calera’s Matthew Doerfler was named to the Second Team as a midfielder. The Eagles also had two Honorable Mentions in midfielder Edson Gonzalez and defender Armando Perez.
Indian Springs defender Erik Ledvina earned a place on the Second Team and his teammates Avery Biga and Halden Honeycutt earned Honorable Mentions after featuring in the midfield.
The Helena Huskies were represented on the Second Team by goalkeeper Charlie Steel and on the Honorable Mentions list by forward Austin Lewis, midfielder Agustin Rodriguez and defenders Ryan Borden and Jack Hendrix.
Montevallo received three Honorable Mentions for forward Irving Choto, midfielder Alexis Lopez and defender Ben Locks.
