HOOVER – Residents enjoyed a slew of activities and dishes during this year’s edition of Celebrate Hoover Day.
The free annual citywide celebration took place on Saturday, April 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Veterans Park and treated attendees to a variety of activities, including live music, food trucks, carnival rides, inflatables, a petting zoo, pony rides, vendors and document shredding.
“Celebrate Hoover Day started in 2007 and was such a big hit,” said Kelly Peoples, events manager for the city of Hoover. “We have continued to do it every year since then. We have a great band out here today, lots of activities for kids, a vendor tent with lots of businesses handing out information and of course, our big apple pie.”
Out of all the colorful opportunities at the event, the massive apple pie being divided amongst participants was a sight to behold.
“I know everybody has had pie before, but I think it’s just how big it is,” Peoples said. “It’s 10 feet in diameter. It is shoveled and distributed (to attendees).”
Peoples shared that her favorite part of Celebrate Hoover Day was being able to see all of the people enjoy the various activities the event had out to offer.
“People from all walks of life—every demographic—are out here,” she said. “You have people who work for the city—the police and fire departments are out here. You have all of your building services and public works teams. To see all the people who live here come out and enjoy the day is truly special.”
Ginger Branson, adjutant for the American Legion Ryan Winslow Post 911 Chapter, attended the event and said it was wonderful to meet so many people at the event which typically draws thousands to the park each year.
“You’d be surprised at how many veterans come out here with their families,” Branson said. “This is a great experience for us and for them.”
The event not only creates a venue for fun festivities but also serves as a chance to bring local entrepreneurs and business owners together with the community for a mutual celebration of the city.
“It’s not just a fun festival, but it is also a way for Hoover patrons to show their pride for the city and love for each other as they learn more about and support one another’s businesses,” said Amy Moore who attended the event.
