With spring in full gear and summer just around the corner, Shelby County is chock-full of events of all sorts to entertain residents and local families.

The Oak Mountain State Fair just ended a successful run of dates in Pelham with ample opportunity for its nearly 50,000 guests to enjoy a variety of carnival snacks and a long list of rides and attractions.

Calera Main Street recently saw a successful start to its summer First Friday event series which kicked off on April 5 with its third annual crawfish boil. As the series goes on, the organization will host an event each month with a specific theme and plenty of snacks and activities for residents to enjoy.

Alabaster treated kids to its second annual Touch-A-Truck event on April 6—providing a chance for them to learn about the various vehicles first responders use  as well as the fun opportunity to crawl throughout the vehicles and imagine themselves in control. Likewise, the city of Columbiana also hosted a Touch-A-Truck event on Saturday providing local kids with the same adventurous opportunity.

The University of Montevallo spent all of last week in celebration of Earth Week and put together a wide variety of events for students to enjoy. The celebration included an EcoSwap, a hike around University Lake, a natural collage workshop, a garden work day and the annual Earth Fest which took place on the Main Quad with live music, food trucks, environmental representatives and craft activities.

These various activities and celebrations are only a small representation of the number of events happening across the county each and every week with even more slated to come as summer begins.

Calera Main Street is just getting started with its First Friday events and will host a Cinco de Mayo Cornhole Tournament on Friday, May 3. The next edition of Helena Old Town will take place on Saturday, May 18 with performances by the Allman Betts band and Taylor Hunnicutt.

Seniors from cities across Shelby County will be treated to special event during the county’s annual Senior Picnic and Spring Fling which will take place this week on Wednesday, April 24 in Columbiana. The event will treat attendees to barbecue and performances by the Shelby County High School Show Choir and the BT Collective.

Some of the biggest events in the county all year long are still set to occur with Columbiana set to hold its annual Liberty Day festivities in June and Alabaster’s CityFest set to occur sometime this summer.

It is clear that no matter where you live in Shelby County, there is another festive activity right around the corner for you to enjoy.
