HOMEWOOD – Coming in on the heels of a 2-0 win in a playoff preview against the Hoover Bucs, the No. 1 Oak Mountain Eagles looked to put the finishing touches on an undefeated regular season as they put their 23-0-1 record to the final two tests.
The first of those tests came in the form of the John Carroll Catholic Cavaliers, the No. 4 team in Class 5A, on the road at John Carroll Catholic High School in Oak Mountain’s last road match of the regular season.
In the end, the Eagles walked away with the 2-0 win on Friday, April 19 to extend their unbeaten streak to 25 straight matches.
Oak Mountain got the better of the two sides in the early moments and scored the opening goal of the match in the first half.
The Eagles defense continued to control the match much like it has throughout the season and kept the Cavaliers off the scoreboard in the first half.
While Oak Mountain went into halftime with a 1-0 lead, it wasn’t satisfied with that.
The Eagles doubled up their advantage in the second half to take a 2-0 lead and grab an even tighter hold on the match.
Oak Mountain saw out the win from there, holding steady on the defensive end of the pitch for a clean sheet to secure the 2-0 victory.
Aidan Riley and Sam Collins found the back of the net for the Eagles in the win, and Riley assisted on Collins’ goal to contribute to both goal-scoring opportunities.
Luke Jovanovich had the assist on Riley’s goal on top of his contributions on defense.
Nate Joiner led the team with four of his team’s nine shots as no one else on Oak Mountain had more than one on the night.
Alexander Chaide-Cruz secured the win and the shutout without having to make a single save.
The Eagles will look to finish the regular season without a loss in their final match before the playoffs, a home battle with the Thompson Warriors on Tuesday, April 23 at 7 p.m.
