HELENA – The Briarwood Christian Lions kept their bid for a pair of area soccer championships alive as the boys and girls soccer teams claimed a pair of wins over the Helena Huskies.
The girls remained undefeated in area play with a 6-0 win against the Huskies, and the boys followed that up with a 4-2 win at Helena High School on Friday, April 5.
Briarwood’s girls came out of the gate firing on all cylinders in the top 10 matchup to start the doubleheader.
The Lions sprinted ahead to a commanding lead in the first half with six goals in the first 40 minutes of the match.
Combined with a shutout effort on defense, that gave Briarwood a 6-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
The defense continued to carry the Lions in the second half as they completed the clean sheet over their area foes by not allowing a goal for the entire match.
While the offense took the foot off the gas and didn’t score the rest of the way, their first half effort was enough to secure the 6-0 win and improve to 4-0 in area play.
As for the boys, they had a solid first half of their own, following up the girls’ six-goal effort with two of their own in the first half.
They also kept Helena off the scoreboard through the first 40 minutes to hit the halftime locker room with a 2-0 advantage.
The Huskies battled back in the second half and got on the board not just once but twice to put the pressure on Briarwood.
However, the Lions scored a pair of goals of their own after halftime to match Helena’s offensive output and go back up by two goals.
In the end, Briarwood walked away with the 4-2 victory to take back the top spot in the area on goal differential over Pelham.
The Lions will play their penultimate area match of the season as they take on Indian Springs on the road on Tuesday, April 9 with the girls playing at 5 p.m. and the boys taking the field at 7 p.m.
Helena will take the field at Helena High School for the final time this regular season with senior night against McAdory on Tuesday, April 9. The girls will kick off at 5 p.m. and the boys will play at 7 p.m.
