KIMBERLY – After seeing their first inning lead disappear in the bottom of the frame, the Oak Mountain Eagles recovered to come out on top on the road against the Mortimer Jordan Blue Devils.

The Eagles scored a pair of unanswered runs and held the Blue Devils scoreless for six straight innings to earn the 3-2 win on Thursday, March 21 at Mortimer Jordan High School.

After Bella Williams hit a leadoff single in the top of the first, she advanced to scoring position off a sacrifice bunt by Emma Hawkins.

That allowed Alea Rye to bring her home on an 0-1 RBI single, and Oak Mountain took the 1-0 lead.

However, an error to start the bottom of the first put a runner in scoring position for Mortimer Jordan, and the Blue Devils capitalized shortly after.

Mortimer Jordan hit an RBI single with the next batter to tie up the game at 1-1.

Sophia Williams struck out the next batter, but the Blue Devils hit a single to put a second runner on base. She then took another strikeout to put Mortimer Jordan in a two-out hole.

The hosts overcame the pressure and singled again to score another run. The hit put the Blue Devils up 2-1 after the first inning.

Mortimer Jordan put another pair of runners in scoring position in the bottom of the second, but the Eagles got out of the jam and then struck again.

In the top of the third, Rye reached on a fielder’s choice that forced the second out and stole second during Anna Dubose’s ensuing at-bat. Dubose then brought her home with an RBI double to make the score 2-2.

Both teams had their chances in the following innings as they sought to break the deadlock, but after Oak Mountain took care of another bases loaded situation in the bottom of the fifth, it got to capitalize off that momentum in the top of the sixth.

While the first batter of the inning hit into a ground out, Maggie Miller and Emma McGregor hit back-to-back singles to put a pair of runners on base.

Mortimer Jordan put the Eagles in another two-out hole right after, but Bella Williams came up with a pop fly single that allowed Miller to score, giving Oak Mountain a 3-2 lead.

From there, the Eagles took care of the Blue Devils in the sixth and seventh innings to secure the win.

DuBose went 3-4 with an RBI to lead the offense. Bella Williams and McGregor both went 2-3 with Williams earning a run and an RBI in the process.

Sophia Williams earned the win with four strikeouts and no earned runs in 4.1 innings against seven hits, three walks and two unearned runs. Kelsey Crain took the save with 2.2 shutout innings, earning three strikeouts against two hits in the process.

Oak Mountain will have a week off before playing four tournament games in Oxford on March 29 and 30.
