MONTEVALLO – The Montevallo Bulldogs will go into spring break as winners after both the varsity boys and girls teams defeated the Chilton County Tigers.
The boys earned a 4-1 win over the Tigers while the girls held on for a 1-0 victory on Thursday, March 21 at Montevallo High School.
Montevallo’s varsity girls started out the night strong as they defended their home field and outlasted Chilton County.
The first half came and went without a goal as the teams entered halftime in a perilous tied situation.
With the game balancing on a 0-0 score line going into the second half, the Bulldogs broke the deadlock after halftime and scored the opening goal.
Montevallo’s defense continued to work after that goal and preserved the shutout to maintain the lead.
In the end, the Bulldogs walked away with a clean sheet and a 1-0 win to get back to winning ways after falling to Class 6A Helena earlier in the week.
The varsity boys, on the other hand, entered the match with the Tigers on a roll thanks to a victory over the Helena Huskies on Tuesday, March 19, scoring late in the match to take the 2-1 win.
Montevallo had the early edge in the first half as the hosts scored first to take a 1-0 lead.
That advantage lasted into halftime as the Bulldogs held the Tigers scoreless until the break.
While Chilton County scored a goal in the second half, it couldn’t come close to earning the lead as Montevallo had an even better offensive effort in the final 40 minutes.
After scoring just one goal in the first half, the Bulldogs had three in the second, and that helped them build a lead and maintain it.
When the final whistle blew, Montevallo walked away with the 4-1 win and extended its win streak to three matches in a row.
The varsity boys team improved to 11-5 and has now won 10 of their last 11 matches. The girls are now 8-5-1 on the year.
Both teams will return after spring break with an area game on the road against American Christian on Tuesday, April 2, with the girls playing at 5:30 p.m. and the boys taking the field at 7:15 p.m.
