CALERA – The Thompson Warriors are now winners of five games in a row after rolling to a win over the Calera Eagles 9-0 on the road at Calera High School on Tuesday, March 12.
Two batters after a leadoff single by D’Marion Terrell in the top of the first, Peryn Bland hit into a groundout that brought Terrell home and opened up a 1-0 lead.
Thompson didn’t look back from there, capitalizing on free baserunners surrendered by Calera to extend its lead.
After the first two batters of the second got out, back-to-back walks and a pair of stolen bases put runners on second and third for the Warriors.
An error occurred that allowed Terrell to reach base and brought both runners home, taking the lead to three runs. The next batter Crook hit an RBI double for the fourth run of the night.
That score line held until the top of the fifth as both the Eagles and Thompson settled into the game. However, with a runner on second and two outs during the Warriors half of the fifth, the visitors made their move once again.
Tucker Arrington hit a single on the first pitch he saw to bring home Drake McBride and score the fifth run.
After a scoreless sixth inning, Thompson got back to work in the top of the seventh to add to its 5-0 lead before the end of the game.
A hit batter and an error put two runners on base with one out for Wyatt Williams. He hit an RBI single to increase the lead to six and restart the scoring.
Another hit batter loaded up the bases, and Luke Reid capitalized by hitting a two-run single to left, bringing home both McBride and Williams.
Calera loaded up the bases again with a walk on the next batter, allowing Braydon Smith to bring the final run home with a sacrifice fly, sealing the 9-0 win.
Williams earned the win with five innings of shutout baseball. He took six strikeouts against two hits and three walks.
Thompson will return home on Thursday, March 14 for another county matchup against Spain Park at 7 p.m. While that game goes on, Calera will face John Carroll on the road at the same time.
