Calera boys, girls soccer claim pair of wins over Montevallo, Mortimer Jordan

The Calera Eagles took wins in back-to-back days as they defeated their county foe the Montevallo Bulldogs on Monday, March 11 at Montevallo High School before beating the Mortimer Jordan Blue Devils on Tuesday, March 12 at Calera High School.
Both the varsity boys and varsity girls teams picked up wins in the matches to start the week on the right foot.
After getting back to .500 with their most recent result, the varsity boys cruised to victories over Montevallo and Mortimer Jordan.
Calera started the first half strong against Montevallo, scoring a pair of goals to take an early lead. The Bulldogs only scored one goal in response, making the halftime score 2-1 in favor of the Eagles.
The second half echoed the first half as Calera outscored Montevallo 2-1 after the break, sealing the 4-2 win for the Eagles.
Calera spread out its offense across four different goal-scorers, including Armando Perez, Matthew Doerfler, Alexander Garcia and Edson Gonzalez. Blas Herrera assisted on three of the goals while Perez had an assist on the other.
Mason Drake made four saves in goal against one goal allowed to help the Eagles secure the win.
That set up an even more dominant victory the next day against Mortimer Jordan.
Calera fired three goals past the Blue Devils in the first half to assert itself as the early favorite and take a 3-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Eagles never lifted their foot off the gas and racked up seven goals after halftime, securing the 10-0 win via mercy rule.
Nine different Calera players found the back of the net as Sam Njoroge scored twice and Jadavien Baker, Doerfler, Garcia, TJ Hernandez-Sanchez, Herrera, Gonzalez and Sebastian Parra each had a goal apiece.
Perez had three assists in the win, Doerfler assisted on a pair of goals and Nduka Osanu, Herrera, Elijah Garrison, Andrei Cuenca and Gonzalez each added an assist as well.
The victories took the Eagles to 6-4 on the season.
As for the varsity girls, they continued their winning ways by improving to 6-4-2 on the year with wins over Montevallo and Mortimer Jordan.
The Eagles scored the opening goal in their match with the Bulldogs on Monday, and their defense helped them take a 1-0 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Calera broke through the Montevallo backline even more frequently as it scored three goals in the final 40 minutes, securing the 4-0 win over their county rival in the process.
The next day, the Eagles got into a tightly fought battle with Mortimer Jordan.
The teams were only closely separated throughout the game with only one goal being the difference down the stretch between the Blue Devils and Calera.
In the end, the Eagles edged out Mortimer Jordan at home by taking the 3-2 win in the match, claiming their second victory in as many days.
The Calera varsity girls will play an area foe for their next match as they travel to Chilton County on Thursday, March 14 at 7 p.m.
As for the varsity boys, they will next play on Monday, March 18 against Gardendale at home at 6 p.m.
