JEKYLL ISLAND, GA – The Spain Park Jaguars passed their biggest test of the season with flying colors as they took down a trio of top sides from the state of Georgia.
The Jags went 3-0 at the Tournament of Champions in Jekyll Island, Georgia from March 8-10, defeating Frederica Academy, the Lowndes Vikings and St. Pius X Catholic Golden Lions.
The wins took Spain Park to 13-0 on the season, tightening their grip on the top spot in the Alabama girls soccer coaches rankings and sending a statement to the rest of Class 7A ahead of the remainder of area play.
The Jags extended their win streak by playing how they have for much of the season: scoring goals in bunches while keeping their opponents from finding the back of the net with a strong defense.
Spain Park started the tournament on the right foot against Frederica Academy on Thursday, March 8, scoring five goals in the opening 40 minutes to take a commanding 5-0 lead at halftime.
After the break, the Jags continued their dominance with three more goals in the second half while keeping a clean sheet.
That gave Spain Park the 8-0 win to kick off the weekend, and it set the tone for a pair of big wins to follow.
The next day, the Jags continued their run with a victory over Lowndes.
For the second straight game, Spain Park kept its opponent out of the back of the net as it secured another clean sheet.
The shutout effort allowed the offense to capitalize, which it did with five goals throughout the match.
With the 5-0 win over the Vikings, the Jags improved to 2-0 on the weekend.
The weekend culminated with their final game of the tournament against St. Pius X.
After its high-scoring start to the tournament, Spain Park was held scoreless by the Golden Lions in the first half as the Jags couldn’t find a way to score.
However, the Spain Park defense kept the game scoreless on the other end to prevent St. Pius X from capitalizing on offense.
That kept the Jags in the game and helped them capitalize in the second half after entering halftime tied 0-0.
Spain Park scored three unanswered goals in the second half to secure the 3-0 win and finish the tournament undefeated.
The 13-0 Jags will prepare for a pair of area play tests at home starting with Chelsea on Friday, March 15 at 5 p.m.
