Schools closed Jan. 12 due to severe weather

All local school systems have announced school buildings will be closed on Friday, Jan. 12 due to severe weather.
Shelby County Schools, Pelham City Schools and Alabaster City Schools will be closed Jan. 12 due to the threat of severe weather. Students will transition to remote and e-learning. All schools will also be closed on Monday, Jan. 15 for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
Severe weather is expected across the central Alabama area on Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. According to the Weather Forecast Office, the greatest threat-timing is expected to be around midday to early afternoon along east of the I-65 corridor—south of the I-20 corridor. Strong winds are possible throughout the day, including windows of 15 to 30 mph and gusts of up to 50 mph at times.
There is also potential for freezing rain and snow on Monday night and on Thursday night, Jan. 18.
