TUSCALOOSA – The Montevallo Bulldogs used a strong start to set the tone for an area win over the Holt Ironmen, taking the 35-15 victory at Holt High School on Tuesday, Jan. 9.
The Bulldogs hit the ground running in the first quarter, getting their offense going with six points from Zabdy Perez and four from Yazmin Chavez in the opening eight minutes.
Their defense also held the Ironmen to just two baskets from the field, which let them take a 12-5 lead into the second quarter.
Montevallo’s defense only got better from there by shutting out Holt for the remainder of the first half.
That allowed a balanced Bulldogs attack to tack on seven more points before the halftime break and go into the locker room leading 19-5.
With a 14-point advantage at the midway mark in the game, Montevallo largely kept the same pace in the third quarter, scoring three baskets from the field and allowing just three points from the Ironmen.
That gave the Bulldogs a 25-8 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Both teams’ offenses picked up in the final moments of the game and combined for 17 fourth-quarter points.
Montevallo, however, had the edge and extended its commanding lead to 20 before the end of the game to put the finishing touches on another area win.
Perez led the Bulldogs with 11 points, and Chavez and Brianna Hudson each scored eight points apiece as the guards dominated the scoring for Montevallo.
The Bulldogs will take another road trip in area play on Friday, Jan. 12 at 6 p.m. as they seek to sweep the regular season series against West Blocton
