HOOVER – Christmas came early for the Spain Park Jaguars after they secured three straight wins in four days, beating the Westminster at Oak Mountain Knights, Gardendale Rockets and Bessemer City Tigers at home at Spain Park High School.
The Jags started off the week with a dominant win over county foe Westminster OM on Monday, Dec. 18.
Spain Park kicked off the game on a 12-0 run as Jordyn Corey and Ava Leonard each score four points and the defense shut out the Knights in the opening quarter.
Westminster OM found some offense in the second quarter by scoring seven points, but the Jags fought back with 17 points from six scorers, including four points each from Nylah Calhoun and Tori Flournoy, to lead at halftime.
Coming out of the break with a 29-7 lead, Spain Park kept improving on the offensive end of the floor with a 19-point performance in the third quarter.
Leonard dominated with seven points to take her into double-figures, extending their lead to 37 points at the end of the quarter.
The Jags cruised to the victory from there, winning 53-13 to get back to winning ways.
Leonard led the team with 11 points, while Corey and Teagan Huey each had 10 points. Flournoy scored seven points and Calhoun had six points in the win.
The next day on Tuesday, Dec. 19, Spain Park got off to another fast start to beat Gardendale.
Calhoun had six of the Jags’ 15 first-quarter points as they jumped ahead to an early 15-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Rockets did outscore Spain Park 11-10 in the second quarter, but they could only cut the lead to 10 before halftime thanks to a pair of three-pointers from the Jags’ MC Hunter.
With Spain Park up 25-15, the two teams settled into a defensive third quarter and combined for nine points.
However, the Jags increased their lead by three to build out their double-digit advantage going into the fourth quarter.
Spain Park saved its best effort for last with a 19-point final quarter led by nine points from Flournoy.
That was crucial, as Gardendale also had its best quarter of the game with 16 fourth-quarter points, and Spain Park walked away with the 50-34 win.
Flournoy scored 15 points, Calhoun had 10 and Hunter and Huey each scored six points.
The Jags used their momentum from their two wins to power their way to their most dominant victory of the week against Bessemer City on Thursday, Dec. 21.
Huey scored five of Spain Park’s eight points in the opening quarter to lead 8-2 after the first eight minutes, and that paved the way for it to pull away in the second quarter.
The Jags outscored the Tigers 21-1 in the second, with Leonard scoring eight points and Trinity Daniels adding five as Spain Park held Bessemer City to just one basket from the field in the first half.
While Spain Park only added a pair of free-throws in the third quarter, it extended the lead in the fourth with 19 more points, including five more from Daniels to take her into double-figures.
The Jags defense kept the effort going all game long and kept the Tigers in single digits for the entire game to secure the 46-9 win and extend their win streak to three games in a row.
Huey led all scorers with 12 points, Daniels scored 10 points and Leonard had eight points in the win.
Spain Park will host the Jag Challenge on December 28 and 29 after the Christmas break.
