ALABASTER – Behind two runs to start each half and three scorers in double figures, the Thompson Warriors were able to pick up a home win against county foe Spain Park on Tuesday, Dec. 5
The Warriors opened up a 30-point lead at the end of the third quarter after a fast start to both halves of the game, ultimately leading to a 59-39 win over the Jaguars.
Thompson opened the game on a 6-0 run that set the tone for much of the night, eventually taking that run out to 9-2 in a balanced effort that saw four different players score in the opening minutes of the game.
Spain Park trimmed the deficit to 13-6 at one point on a bucket from TJ Lamar, but the Warriors ended the period with a clutch 3-pointer from Daeshaun Morrissette to extend the lead to 10 going to the second quarter.
The Jags answered with the first basket of the second quarter, but anytime Spain Park hit a basket, Thompson had an answer.
The Warriors quickly hit a 3-pointer from Riley Bryant, who had two from beyond the arc in the quarter and 13 points in the half, to answer and started the period on a 9-4 run to extend the lead to 25-10 after Jay Green hit a 3-pointer of his own.
Spain Park never got closer than 13 the rest of the half, and two more 3-pointers from the Warriors down the stretch gave them a 33-15 lead at the half.
Thompson capitalized on that momentum to start the second half, using a crushing 8-0 run to start the third quarter, bettering the Warriors’ 6-0 run to start the game to open up a 41-15 advantage.
That became part of a dominant third quarter for the Warriors, who eventually extended the lead to 30 points when Jalen Pritchett ended the period with an and-1 to make it 51-21 going to the final quarter.
Spain Park, however, didn’t roll over despite the large deficit.
The Jags started the final quarter on a 14-1 run with Thompson’s backups in for a portion of that, leading to the starters returning for the Warriors.
Still, Spain Park had a completely different effort and attitude, which led to them pulling to within 17 points at 52-35 off four straight points from Josh Fonbah, back-to-back 3-pointers from Jackson Bradley, a layup from Quinn Davis and a steal that led to two made free throws for Griffin Gann.
Thompson, however, halted the run in a big way when Robinson capitalized on an and-1 that extended the lead back to 20 point before a block from Green was pushed the other way and finished off with a nice dish to Robinson for a layup to make it 57-35.
The Warriors finished off the win with one more basket to complete the 59-39 victory.
Thompson was led by Riley Bryant with 13 points, while Masiah Robinson added 11 and Anderius Olds finished with 10 to give the Warriors three in double figures.
The Jaguars, who were without Korbin Long and Nick Richardson, got 12 points from Fonbah, who finished 6-6 from the line with three made baskets, while Bradley added 10 points for a second scorer in double figures.
