Jackie Wayne Clayton, 77, of Birmingham passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family on November 16, 2023.
He was born in Gadsden, Alabama on October 24, 1946, to Jacob Samuel and Opal “Maxine” Clayton. He graduated from Emma Samson High School and received a scholarship to play football for the University of Wyoming. He later played football at Samford University where he earned his bachelor’s degree and went on to earn two master’s degrees from the University of Montevallo.
Jackie “Coach” Clayton was a beloved teacher, coach, and administrator. He was loved by so many because he poured his heart and soul into developing and molding young lives. Over his 46 year career, he taught and coached at Mountain Brook High School, Homewood High School, Oak Grove High School, Shades Valley High School and Vincent High School.
Jackie was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Maxine Clayton, and brothers Allen Clayton & David Clayton. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Ginger Clayton; Children, Kayce Clayton Watkins (Owen), Jay Clayton (Craig Pavitt), Kyle Clayton (Galyn); Grandchildren, Hannah Watkins, Rylee Watkins, Ryder Clayton, Tyler Clayton, Cole Watkins, Ashtyn Clayton, Chayce Clayton; Great Granddaughter, Phoenix Reiter; Brothers, Danny Clayton and Edwin Clayton; along with many special nieces & nephews and brothers & sisters in law.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023, at Noon at First Baptist Church Trussville, 128 N Chalkville Rd, Trussville, Alabama.
In lieu of flowers, we know that Coach Clayton would be thrilled for donations to be made to your local area Parks & Recreation, to afford the children of families who are struggling financially the ability to play community sports.
