Spain Park finishes runner-up at Mountain Brook Turkey Jam

MOUNTAIN BROOK – The Spain Park Jaguars continued picking up wins and testing themselves against high-quality opponents with a second-place finish at the Turkey Jam from Nov. 18-21 at Mountain Brook High School.
The Jags defeated Dothan and Ramsey en route to a finals matchup against Mountain Brook.
Spain Park’s run started with a 66-40 win over the Dothan Wolves on Saturday, Nov. 18.
Korbin Long got the Jags going with 10 points in the first quarter to help establish a 14-6 lead at the end of the quarter.
He added six more points before the half was over as Spain Park outpaced Dothan to take a 28-18 lead into halftime.
After the break, the Jags spread out the scoring across six different scorers as the Wolves cut the lead to nine.
With Spain Park up 42-33 going into the fourth quarter, the Jags turned on the jets to seal the victory.
Harrison Stewart knocked down a pair of three-pointers and Nick Richardson also had six points as Spain Park scored 24 points in the final quarter to win by 26.
Long led the Jags with 26 points, Stewart had nine, TJ Lamar had eight and Chapman Blevins had six.
The Jags then kept their journey to the title alive with a 42-33 win over the Ramsay Rams on Monday, Nov. 20.
Ramsay had the early edge in the first quarter, but Spain Park kept pace and only trailed 12-11 at the end of the quarter.
The Jags defense then gave a strong effort in the second quarter and held Ramsay to just five more points before halftime.
Spain Park capitalized on offense with five points from Stewart and a three-pointer from Jackson Bradley to score 12 points in the quarter and take a 23-17 lead into the halftime break.
After the teams came out of the locker room, the Jags kept up the pressure on the Rams in the third quarter and increased their lead.
Bradley knocked down a pair of three-pointers and Lamar also had six points as Spain Park led 37-28 going into the fourth.
From there, the Jags closed out the nine-point victory as both teams scored five points each in the final quarter to give Spain Park the 42-33 win and advance to the title game.
Lamar led the Jags with 13 points and Stewart had 10, while Bradley scored nine points.
Spain Park then moved on to the championship game against the host Mountain Brook Spartans in a showdown of Final Four teams in their respective classifications from last season.
The Jags scored nine points in the opening quarter but fell behind early as the Spartans led 12-9 after the first.
Long then scored five points in the following quarter, but Ty Davis scored 13 of Mountain Brook’s 18 points in the second quarter to go up 30-20 as the teams headed to the locker room.
In the third quarter, the Jags had a solid showing on the free throw line, going 4-for-6 from the stripe in addition to another three-pointer from Stewart.
However, a 10-point quarter by John Webb powered the Spartans and increased their lead to 46-29.
Long went 4-for-4 in the fourth quarter to add to three-pointers from Stewart and Bradley as Mountain Brook capped off its second win over the Jags of the season with four three-pointers for a 60-44 victory.
Despite the loss, Spain Park went 2-1 in the tournament and improved to 4-3 on the season while playing games against quality opposition ahead of the last full month of non-area play.
