Bessie Warren Hurt Barclay, 96, is preceded in death by her husband, Lee Armstead Barclay Sr.
She is survived by her children, Don Hurt and his wife, Kathy of Alabaster, Peggy Hurt Kent of Alabaster, Lee A. Barclay, Jr. and his wife, Judy of Cookeville, Tennessee, Barbara Barclay Barton and her husband, Michael of Mooresville, North Carolina, Alan L. Barclay and his wife Beryl of Anderson, South Carolina, Betty Jane Barclay of San Diego, California, and Nancy Barclay Rood and her husband Michael of El Centro, California; grandchildren, Shanon Hurt, Meredith Hurt Box, Dana Hurt Leslie, Timothy Mullins and his wife Stephanie, Leigh Mullins Pounds and her husband, Andrew, Michelle Kent Brakefield and her husband, Scott, Marsha Kent Roach and her husband, Joey, Scott Barclay and his wife, Lisa, Kelly Barclay Cochran and her husband, Greg, Jason Barton and his wife, Katherine “Katie”, Scott Alan Barclay and his wife, Inga, Christopher Barclay, and Cory Barclay; and great grandchildren, Michael and Landon Hurt, Kodie and Meghan Box, Taylor and Jaxon Leslie, Preston and Peyton Pounds, Noah, Winslett and Shepherd Brakefield, Tyler and Marlee Roach, Coleman, Chance, and Peyton Barclay, Ethan, Evie, Poppy, and Charlotte Barclay.
Mrs. Barclay was born on Nov. 14, 1923 to William Wiggins Warren and Mary Bessie Harris Warren. Mrs. Barclay died on Monday, June 29. Mrs. Barclay graduated Montevallo High School in 1940 and Birmingham School of Business in Birmingham. She worked for Whaley Furniture and Dr. Lewis Kirkland in Montevallo.
Bessie and Lee married in 1968 and spent many years traveling, square dancing and watching their favorite team, the Atlanta Braves. Mrs. Barclay was one of the oldest members of the Eastern Star, Montevallo Chapter #424. Mrs. Barclay hosted and was a member of several bible studies and the Montevallo Garden Club.
Mrs. Barclay was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in Montevallo, AL and then became a member of Westwood Baptist Church when she moved to Alabaster in 2003.
Visitation will be held Thursday, July 2 from 10-11 a.m. at Rockco Funeral Home (Montevallo) with graveside services to follow at Montevallo Cemetery. Dr. Kenneth Bruce will officiate the service. Social distancing and mask requirements will be observed per Montevallo ordinance.
Pallbearers will be Scott, Noah, Winslett and Shepherd Brakefield, Joey and Tyler Roach, Shanon and Michael Hurt, and Kodie Box.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church in Montevallo, Westwood Baptist Church in Alabaster or the charity of your choice.
