Maxine Smith Brewster, 95, of Calera passed away in the early morning on Saturday, May 30 in Arab.

Mrs. Brewster was born in Dallas, Texas, to the late William Arch and Lona Helson Smith. Before the passing of her late husband, James Patrick Brewster, they owned and operated a dairy farm on Smokey Road from 1943 to 1972. She carried on her late husband’s duties in raising beef cattle until the mid 90s.

She enjoyed square dancing, flowers, gardening and was gifted with needlework, making several afghans and quilts. She entered her crafts and canned goods in the Shelby County Fair and won many blue ribbons.

She was a homemaker and a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She had several talents and passions but above all she loved God and her family. She was a current member of Concord Baptist Church and a past member of Montevallo First Baptist Church. She is a member of the Shelby County Home Extension Club.

She was also preceded in death by two sons, James W. Brewster of Columbiana, and Larry J. Brewster of Georgia; three brothers, William A. Smith, Jr., Arthur Curtis Smith, and Robert L. Smith; and two sisters, Delores Smith Garnett and JoAnn Smith Frederick.

She is survived by their middle son, Henry L. (Kathy) Brewster of Union Grove; six grandchildren Leslie (Ross) Allen, Karen (Stacy) George, James Brewster, Scott Brewster, Jason (Laurel) Brewster and April (Bradley) Wisener and two step-grandchildren, Ross (Ally) Ozley and Robin (Heather) Ozley; nine great-grandchildren; and eight nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are being handled by Rockco Funeral Home of Montevallo, where the family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 6 with funeral services to follow and interment at Shelby Memory Gardens.

Honorary pallbearers are Gordon Garnett, James Brewster, Jason Brewster, Scott Brewster, Patrick Brewster, Hayden Leak and Luke Allen.
