ALABASTER – An inmate at the Shelby County Jail died while receiving treatment at Shelby Baptist Medical Center on May 21.
Stephanie N. Dawson, 36, from Montevallo, died at about 2:30 p.m. on May 21.
Dawson was booked into the Shelby County Jail on April 4 on theft-related charges.
She was later admitted to Shelby Baptist Medical Center for treatment related to what the SCSO described as “pre-existing medical conditions.”
It is believed that her death is not related to COVID-19, according to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office.
“The loss of a loved one is always a painful time for those left behind,” Sheriff John Samaniego said in the release. “We express our sincere condolences to Ms. Dawson’s family and friends during this difficult time.”
Dawson will be transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences by the Shelby County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy to further investigate her cause of death.
As part of standard procedure, the Sheriff’s Office is conducting an internal review of the matter.
