MONTEVALLO – The Montevallo Rotary Club has begun accepting applications for its 2020 scholarships.
The club will award two $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors who live in the Montevallo area and will be attending the University of Montevallo this fall.
“I think in light of everything that’s happened, this scholarship is going to be important for someone who may have been economically impacted by the virus,” club member Steve Gilbert said. “Certainly, attendance could be down at our universities. We want to do whatever we can to make sure we’re helping move this forward and helping a potential student continue with their education.”
In addition to living within the 35115 or 36790 zip codes, applicants must be public, private or homeschool seniors graduating in the 2019-2020 school year, and provide an acceptance letter from the University of Montevallo to attend the 2020 fall semester.
Applicants also must complete a scholarship application and write a minimum 500-word essay explaining what the International Rotary’s Four-Way Test means in the community and the world today.
Each local Rotary Club uses the following principles in the four-way test as a guide for the things they think, say or do:
- Is it the truth?
- Is it fair to all concerned?
- Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
- Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
Application forms and essays must be received by Monday, June 15.
Rotary members will then evaluate and vote on the winning two entries.
Each winner will be notified by the email address listed on his or her scholarship application on Wednesday, July 15.
Once the scholarship is accepted, the Montevallo Rotary Club will place the winner’s $1,000 scholarship credit with UM for the 2020 fall semester.
