Dr. Raymond Ozley, associate professor of communication studies at the University of Montevallo, has been selected by his peers to receive the University’s 2020 Faculty Service Award for his impact on and off campus.

The UM Faculty Senate selected Ozley to receive the award, which will be presented during the 2020 UM Founders’ Day in October.

The award recognizes a faculty member who consistently commits time outside of the classroom to serve the University of Montevallo and the local community.

During his 12 years at Montevallo, Ozley has served multiple years on the UM Undergraduate Curriculum and Standards Committee, overhauled the Communication Studies Program’s capstone course and helped the program secure the 2017 Rex Mix Undergraduate Program of Excellence recognition from the National Communication Association. He developed and now oversees the University’s interdisciplinary public relations minor.

“One of the characteristics I appreciate the most about Ray is his tireless ability to attend to details,” Dr. Sherry Ford, UM professor of communication studies, wrote in a letter supporting Ozley’s nomination. “His sharp eye and his critical thought have benefitted our program and the larger University in many ways, most notably through his past leadership in coordinating departmental unit planning and assessment at the request of the department chair.”

During his time on the Faculty Senate, he served as alternate secretary and secretary, as chair of the Academic Policies and Personnel and Handbook Committees and as the senate liaison with the Undergraduate Curriculum and Standards Committee.

Ozley also represents the University at the regional level by serving in several leadership positions in the Communication Theory Division at the Southern States Communication Association. He has served as secretary, president, and currently is executive director for the Alabama Communication Association. He served in the past as the Shelby District marketing chair and district executive committee member of the Boy Scouts of America and has provided pro-bono consulting for several entities including the City of Montevallo, Montevallo Elementary School, Southeast Institute for Higher Learning and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“In addition to his outstanding and continued dedication to the provision of service, Ray’s loyalty to the University of Montevallo is unquestionable,” Dr. Tiffany Wang, UM associate professor of communication, wrote in a letter supporting Ozley’s nomination. “His commitment to departmental, college, University, professional and community activities make him an ideal candidate for the Faculty Senate Service Award.”
