James Walter Niven, age 84, of Columbiana, passed away Thursday, March 19. 

The family graveside service will be on Saturday, March 21 at Pinelawn Gardens with Dr. Mike Miller officiating. Bolton Funeral Home is directing.

Mr. Niven is preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd B. and Irene Niven; and sister, Katie Sandlin. 

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Warren Niven; sister, Clara N. Lewis (Paul); brother, Bennett “Benny” Niven (Agnes); brother-in-law, Daniel Sandlin; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

He retired from Alabama Power Company after 32 years of service. He was a member of many organizations such as E.C. Gaston Energizer Chapter, American Radio Relay League, Shelby County Amateur Radio Club, Holiday Rambler Recreation Vehicle Club, Habitat for Humanity, Shelby County Historical Society, and Shelby Iron Works Park. He also served in the Alabama National Guard.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his honor to the American Heart Association.
