COLUMBIANA – The Shelby Humane Society has closed to the general public to ensure the safety and health of the staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The staff will continue to provide care to the hundreds of animals currently at the facility, and will closely monitor the situation and post updates on social media and Shelbyhumane.org.

“We know you are thinking about our pets and staff,” a March 16 press release read. “Your support during this time will help ensure that essential staff can continue to provide lifesaving care to the animals at Shelby Humane. We remain committed to helping pets and the people who love them, in your community and throughout Alabama.”

Donations can be made at Shelbyhumane.org or by texting SHELBY to 41444.

With the shelter’s adoption center closed, an increase in the number of animals in its care is anticipated.

“We understand it may not always be possible but, if you are planning to surrender a pet during this time, please consider holding on to them through the end of March,” the release read. “We will also need foster families to provide a temporary home to some of our adult dogs or cats through at least the end of March.”

Anyone willing to become foster volunteers for Shelby Humane can visit Shelbyhumane.org/foster-program/.

“We hope that you understand that we are doing our part to assist in slowing the spread and risk of COVID-19 in response to federal and state guidance,” the release read. “By taking these precautions, we are also protecting the community we serve. We appreciate your support and understanding.”
