HOOVER – Jefferson State Community College announced that it has suspended the Judy Merritt Memorial 5K and Eggstravaganza that was scheduled for April 11.

“We are so disappointed to share this news,” Event Director Libby Holmes wrote in a letter announcing the decision. “In an effort toward a proactive response, with numerous bans on large gatherings taking place across our country, the administration of Jefferson State Community College made a decision to suspend the event we were to hold on April 11, 2020.”

Concerns about the spreading of the coronavirus has prompted the postponement or cancellation of events across the country.

The Judy Merritt Memorial 5K and Eggstravaganza is suspended, “meaning we are assuming we will have to cancel the event in a few days to weeks and wish to alert all participants so you can adjust your plans,” the letter stated.

The event is a fundraiser for JSCC scholarships.

Those who have registered and wish to receive a refund will be granted one. Others who wish their payment to be a donation will be sent a letter from the college’s Foundation thanking them for their tax-deductible gift.

“We fully expect to be back and ‘running’ next year!” Holmes said. “The 7,000 candy-filled eggs we have already purchased will be distributed to local schools and churches, and we will keep you updated.

“We thank you for your understanding and certainly wish you and your loved ones health and safety during this uncertain time. We hope to see you next year and thank you for supporting JSCC!”
