FROM STAFF REPORTS
MONTEVALLO – The Montevallo Recycling Center will be temporarily barricaded from Wednesday, Feb. 19, until Friday, Feb. 28, for renovations, weather permitting.
During the renovation period, a trailer will be stationed at the center for residents to continue recycling their household materials.
The trailer was provided by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management to help Montevallo make recycling as streamlined as possible.
“By temporarily closing the gates of the recycling center, we hope to see it become a place that residents can be proud of,” Sustainability Coordinator Olivia Barone said. “The Montevallo Recycling Center gives residents an opportunity to reduce their waste. Recycling conserves resources, saves energy and helps protect the environment.”
The temporary closure will allow for the center to be cleaned and updated in an effort to make it more physically manageable and financially responsible.
One goal for the center is to reduce contamination rates by eliminating plastic bags, to-go containers and Styrofoam.
Furniture, electronics and household waste should not be taken to the center.
Anyone found illegally dumping at the recycling center will be subject to fines.
Starting on Feb. 19, the recycling center will have new hours of operation: Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
The trailer will accept plastic No. 1 and No. 2 (bottles, jugs and jars), aluminum cans, office paper and newspaper, and cardboard.
The trailer will be available for use from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Saturday.
Anyone wanting to drop off large recycling loads should contact the City of Montevallo at (205) 665-2555 to schedule an appointment.
