Briarwood, Westminster perform well at state track

BIRMINGHAM – It was another strong year for the Briarwood Lions and Westminster at Oak Mountain Knights at the 2020 Indoor State Track Championships held at the Birmingham CrossPlex Feb. 7-8.

The two teams finished with a combined five podium finishers, while the Shelby County Wildcats also added two podium finishers in the 4A-5A classification.

As teams, Westminster’s girls finished fifth overall and the boys 13th in the 1A-3A classification, while Briarwood’s boys finished fifth and the girls 10th in the 4A-5A classification.

Briarwood was highlighted by Jake Nunn, who finished in the top two of two different events, including a new state record. With a time of 48.56 in the 400-meter dash, Nunn not only claimed first, but set a new state record.

He also went on to finish second in the 800-meter run in a photo finish. He finished in 1:57.86, while Scottsboro’s Rex Green won with a time of 1:57.14.

Riley Margene also grabbed a podium finisher for the Lions thanks to finishing third in the pole vault with a distance of 13 feet.

Westminster at Oak Mountain picked up its lone win in the girls’ 4X800-meter relay, while Hallie Porterfield and Payton Metcalf highlighted as individual podium finishers.

Porterfield finished second in both the 800-meter run and 3,200-meter run with times of 2:23.25 and 11:54.82, respectively. Metcalf finished third in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.05 seconds, while finishing fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.54. 

The relay team won the event with a time of 10:26.03.

Shelby County was highlighted by a second-place finish from David Vick in the high jump and a third-place finish from Coleman Byars in the long jump.

Vick finished with a height of 6 feet, 2 inches, while Byars finished with a distance of 20 feet, 3.75 inches.
