Westwood’s Family Safe Night aims to educate parents about trends among youth

ALABASTER – Parents of teenagers and adolescents are invited to attend Family Safe Night at Westwood Baptist Church to learn about ways to protect their family from the dangers of the world.

Westwood’s family pastor Rick Callahan said the purpose of the event is to educate and provide up-to-date information to parents about the different challenges facing today’s youth, such as phone and Internet safety, drug trends and vaping/smoking.

The event will be held Nov. 24 at from 5-7 p.m. in the church’s worship center.

“We want to teach parents how to be proactive so that they can educate their kids and teach them how to be safe in their environments,” Callahan said. “These are issues that parents are currently facing or will be facing in the days and years ahead.”

The keynote speaker at the event will by Capt. Clay Hammac, commander of both the Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force and Compact 2020. Westwood Pastor Kenneth Bruce and Callahan will help facilitate the conversation and there will be a question and answer session at the end.

Pathways Professional Counseling will also have representatives at the event handing out pamphlets and offering information about counseling sessions.

Callahan said the church hopes to host more Family Safe Night events in the future that focus on other topics.
