CHELSEA – Chelsea Public Library will host Alabama author Lauren K. Denton for an “Evening with the Author” event on Oct. 10.

The festivities will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the library’s outdoor patio, where Lauren K. Denton will discuss her writing journey, and her debut novel “The Hideaway,” which has been a bestseller on Amazon, USA Today and Wall Street Journal charts.

“Our book club is reading the book for October, and we thought it might be fun to see if Lauren wanted to come talk to our book club,” said Lynn Thomas, a library assistant at the Chelsea Public Library. “As it turns out, Lauren loves book clubs, and she lives in Homewood, so she was very excited to come.”

Thomas said the daytime book club meets every second Thursday, where the name for the club, Second Thursday Book Club, originated.

“We started thinking that it might be fun to reach out to authors that are somewhat well-known and have a tie to Alabama and see if they could come and speak to our club,” Thomas said. “I think whenever you have the opportunity to meet the author and pick their brain it is a real treat.”

While the Thursday book club meets during the lunchtime hour, Thomas said she hopes more people will come to the evening author events that the library hopes to turn into a quarterly schedule.

“We have about 7 to 10 members in our book club, but we are viewing this event as a time for people to come out and meet a local author,” Thomas said.

Denton has three books published, “The Hideaway,” “Hurricane Season” and “Glory Road,” and is currently working on a fourth book to be released at a later date.

According to her website, Denton was born and raised in Mobile and now lives with her husband and two daughters in Homewood.

“I think people enjoy her books because in each novel she has places that are familiar to those from the South,” Thomas said.

The event will be catered by The Two Mann group, and should wrap up around 8 p.m.

There is no charge for the event, and anyone is welcome to attend.
