Westover is continuing to be a growing community, and one of the most recent additions to the business lineup is Mike McLeod with Crown Construction Co.

A little over two years ago, Mike started operating his company at 2755 Westover Road. Originally from the Vestavia Hills area, Mike was given a hammer and a saw at the young age of 5 by his grandfather and told to “make something with them.”

Ever since then, he has been doing just that. He built a tree house at the age of 8 and built several more during his childhood years.

He started a security alarm company in his early years in business but said most of his sales were to new construction builders. “The smell of lumber, paint and building materials got the best of me and I had to go back to my true love, building!”

So, he sold the alarm company and started building houses. He started out with a partner and then established his own company in 1989. He chose the name Crown because he wanted to be known for quality.

He said he strives to reflect this value in all of his projects whether it’s a new build or a remodel. The first 20 years were mainly spec homes, but now he does 48 percent custom homes, 2 percent spec homes and 50 percent remodeling.

He is a certified Green Builder as well.

Mike has built in many areas since he started, covering most of the Birmingham area and also Lay Lake. He currently has a new build going on in the Cameron Woods subdivision in Chelsea, which will be available this fall. He also has two more lots to get started on afterward.

McLeod puts a lot of miles on his pickup truck every day with jobs in Vestavia, Chelsea, Lay Lake and Westover. He takes pride in his company.

Crown Construction company has been awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze level of achievement awards from the Greater Birmingham Association of Home Builders – Parade of Homes. Also, he received the Largest Home Builder Award in 2004 from the Birmingham Business Journal.
