Joseph Edward Dyess, 85, formerly of Opp, passed away peacefully in his home in Alabaster, on Wednesday, July 24.

He was born in Elba to James Theodore and Annie Merle Dyess on June 18, 1934.

He is survived by his wife Rebecca Sue Nolen Dyess; children, James Arthur Dyess, Rebecca Ann Dyess, and Thomas Edward (Brandy) Dyess; and grandchildren, Zachary Thomas Woodard and Kayley Michele Dyess.

Joe graduated from high school in Opp, moving on to Auburn University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He took a break during his studies to serve his country in the United States Army. After graduating in 1959, Joe married his best girl and worked in the textile industry for several years before returning to his hometown.

For many years, he worked the third shift as the Training Director at the local cotton mill and managed the family farm during the day.

Family was everything to Joe. He loved his children and grandchildren without measure, delighting in every moment of their lives. He also touched many lives in the community, where he was known as “Joe Ed”.

He was a very intelligent man, inventing machines to accomplish tasks around the farm. He could build or repair anything mechanical and was skilled with growing many different crops as well as running a successful dairy farm for many years.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at The Country Cathedral, 31022 East US Hwy 84 in Opp, on Saturday, Aug. 3 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. A family graveside service will be held at Alabama National Cemetery, 3133 Hwy 119 in Montevallo, on Monday, Aug. 5 at 11 a.m.
