Mr. Joe E. Merrell, 83, of Dunnellon, Florida, passed away Wednesday, July 3, at Advent Health in Ocala, Florida.

Born in Shelby, Mr. Merrell moved to this area after his retirement from US Steel, where he worked as a millwright. He proudly served his country in the US Army. He attended First United Methodist Church in Dunnellon, Florida.

Survivors include his loving wife of 35 years, Dorothy; daughters, Cindy Smyth (Danny), Brenda Kingery (Dean), Cathi Davis, and Debi Mims (Dwayne); brother, Wilton Merrell; his dear friend, JoAnn Burton; 17 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and his canine companions, Bentley and Cookie.

Mr. Merrell was preceded in death by his first wife, Loretta; his sons, Jody Merrell and Tom Brown; and his grandson, Joshua Tartaglia.

Graveside committal services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at Shelby Memorial Gardens, County Road Rt. 25, in Calera.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
