MONTEVALLO – Residents wanting to honor a veteran in their family can now purchase a banner to be displayed throughout the city.

Banners bearing a veteran’s name, rank, military branch, years of service and a military photo of the veteran are available for $300 each through the Montevallo Main Street Banner Program.

“I think this will help with citizens’ request to show more patriotism around the city,” said Kirk Lightfoot, chairman of the Montevallo Main Street Design Committee. “We will put up as many (banners) as individuals buy to celebrate their veterans.

Lightfoot spoke to the Montevallo City Council on May 28 about the Montevallo Main Street project and said it is no cost to the city.

A portion of the purchase price of the banners will be contributed to the American Village Veterans Living Legacy.

The 30-by-72-foot banners will be located in prominent areas in Montevallo during May (Memorial Day), July (Independence Day) and November (Veterans Day), Lightfoot said.

After a guaranteed three-year display period, each banner will be returned to its purchaser.

In addition to the veteran-specific banners, Lightfoot said the project also entails new generic patriotic banners to be placed along Main Street.

Orders must be received by Aug. 31.
