Shelby County Newspapers Inc. earns 40 APA awards

Shelby County Newspapers Inc. earned a total of 40 editorial, advertising and magazine awards in the preliminary results of the Alabama Press Association’s Media Awards, which were announced on May 17.

SCNI publishes the Shelby County Reporter, 280 Reporter, Alabaster Reporter, Helena Reporter, Pelham Reporter, Shelby Living, Vestavia Hills Magazine, Mountain Brook Magazine, Homewood Life and Hoover’s Magazine.

The APA has announced winners in several categories, but many categories, such as story of the year, ad of the year, general excellence, magazine of the year and advertising sweepstakes, will be announced at the APA Summer Convention in Orange Beach on June 29.

This year, 90 publications submitted 3,394 entries in the editorial and magazine contest, and the entries were judged by the Illinois Press Association.

The Shelby County Reporter competes in category C against other large weekly newspapers.

Editorial contest:

-First place in the Best News Feature Story category for “People are dying” by Neal Wagner

-First place in the Best Local Sports Column category for “JJ Evans’ story is an inspiring one” by Alec Etheredge

-First place in the Online Breaking News Coverage category for coverage of the fatal Galleria police shooting by Stephen Dawkins

-First place in the Best Niche Publication category for “Shelby County football 2018” by Alec Etheredge

-Second place in the Online Breaking News Coverage category for Kat West murder coverage by Briana Harris

-Second place in the Best Niche Publication category for “Profile 2018” by staff

-Second place in the Best Local Sports Column category for “Fred Yancey deserves a spot in the Hall of Fame” by Alec Etheredge

-Second place in the Best News Photo category for “Celebrating America” by Keith McCoy

-Second place in the Best Humorous Column category for “Shelby County’s dragstrips” by Neal Wagner

-Second place in the Best Editorial Column or Commentary category for “We’re all part of the solution” by Neal Wagner

-Second place in the Best Sports News In-depth Coverage category for “U.S Women’s Open” by Alec Etheredge and Keith McCoy

-Second place in the Best Photo Essay category for “Fun in fair weather” by Keith McCoy

-Second place in the Best Sports Feature Story category for “Witnessing his father’s death fuels JJ Evans” by Alec Etheredge

-Second place in the Best Sports Photo category for “Legends on the links” by Keith McCoy

-Third place in the Best Use of Social Media category for “Weekly football show” by Alec Etheredge
