HARPERSVILLE – The Coosa Valley Rebels are one step closer to clinching a playoff berth under first-year head coach Jamie Scruggs after the Rebels were able to take down Springwood 32-19 at home on Friday, Oct. 12.
Coosa Valley, who was 3-19 all time coming into the matchup with the Wildcats, is now 3-6 overall this season, but more importantly the Rebels are now 1-3 in region play as they look to make a late push for a playoff berth.
With a win against region foe Evangel Christian Academy out of Montgomery on Friday, Oct. 19, the Rebels will clinch the fourth spot in the region and a postseason berth.
They’ll be taking on an Evangel team that is 1-7 overall, 0-4 in region play and coming off a 27-12 loss to the same Springwood team Coosa Valley just beat.
While the Rebels jumped up 6-0 early in the contest against Springwood thanks to a 78-yard touchdown run by Kaleb Allen, it was a strong second quarter that really blew the game wide open.
Coosa Valley went on to outscore the Wildcats 20-7 in the quarter to take a 26-7 lead into the half.
Allen added two more touchdown runs of 25 and 8 yards in the quarter, while the Rebels also had a pick-6 from Jacob Brooks to take the commanding lead.
Allen continued his dominant night for Coosa Valley in the third quarter when he reeled off a 93-yard touchdown run to put the Rebels on top 32-7 heading to the final quarter of play.
In the fourth quarter, the Wildcats tacked on 12 late points to make the score look closer than the majority of the game played on the field.
Allen ended the game with 300-plus rushing yards and four touchdowns, while the team had 429 yards of total offense.
Reid Maddox, who is leading the state in interceptions, picked off two more passes in the win. Carson Alexander led the team in tackles with 14, while also adding one sack.
