Helena volleyball picks up wins against Homewood, Calera

The Helena Huskies varsity volleyball team find themselves in a good spot after two solid performances that resulted in sweeps the week of Sept. 17.
Facing two 6A opponents, one being Homewood and the other being region opponent Calera, Helena came away with wins against the Patriots on Sept. 18 and the Eagles on Sept. 20.
Against Homewood, the Huskies defeated the Patriots in straight sets 25-17, 25-13 and 25-21. Attacking the net, Macy Lowery led Helena with seven kills while Emma Johnson had 10 kills and three aces. PG Garrison also added eight kills and three aces for the Huskies.
Sitting at 1-1 in region play, Helena’s Sept. 20 home match against Calera was crucial going forward as the win catapulted the Huskies near the top of the standings.
Helena defeated the Eagles in straight sets 25-15, 25-16 and 25-21 as Garrison finished with 23 digs and eight kills, Mia Johnson had 15 digs, Lowery added 9 kills, Emma Johnson had 10 kills and Rosa Gambarelli provided 31 assists in the win.
Next week, Helena will have two home matches against Spain Park and Chelsea, followed by the Over the Mountain Tournament at Oak Mountain Sept. 28-29.
