PELHAM – With Sept. 17 marking the 231th anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States, the week of Sept. 17-23 was declared Constitution Week in the city of Pelham by Mayor Gary Waters at a meeting on Sept. 17.

This celebration of the Constitution was started by the Daughters of the American Revolution. In 1955, DAR petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into public law on August 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

During the week, citizens are urged to learn more about this important document and celebrate the freedoms it gives.

“I ask all our citizens to reaffirm the ideals that the framers of the Constitution had in 1787 by vigilantly protecting the freedoms guaranteed to us through this guardian of our liberties, remembering that lost rights may never again be realized,” Waters said.
